The sleek hotel resembles a stylish Tuscan villa, done in a modernist approach that feels both natural and open. Napa’s original bed-and-breakfast, which opened in 1981, is in a quiet, residential neighborhood near downtown Napa. The best rooms are in the carriage house, with fireplaces, up to 550 square feet of space and two-person spa tubs. The main house, built in 1902, is charming, with special touches like stained glass and redwood paneling. While there is no spa, the hotel can arrange in-room massages. For a sweet indulgence, order strawberries dipped in chocolate-Merlot sauce from room service or try the crème caramel French toast for breakfast. For an afternoon of wine tasting, make the five- to 10-minute drive to wineries such as Artesa and Domaine Carneros or walk to any of the tasting rooms in downtown Napa.

Surrounded by forested, boulder-strewn hills, this rugged, 157-acre property evokes the isolation of western ranch country, but the Cabernet vineyard at the entrance underscores its true location. A placid lake feeds a creek that gurgles through the property. Guests reside in private lodges, ranging from 600 to 3,000 square feet, that are constructed of cedar, stone and copper. Mahogany decks are shaded by either retractable roofs or overhanging tree branches, and the living areas are decorated in creamy tones. This 2-acre property features eight private cottages in a quiet garden setting with cobblestone paths, redwoods and cork trees. The cottages were originally built in the 1920s and ’40s as homes for orchard workers but have been renovated with comfort in mind. The interiors set a romantic tone with soft hues, king-size beds and gas fireplaces. Down-home features such as custom-made furniture and the cabins’ original old-growth fir floors add to the charm. Bathrooms have two-person Jacuzzi tubs and heated tile floors. The cottages have been updated with wireless Internet and modern amenities, but it’s easy to forget them while enjoying the quiet of this country hideaway. Though it’s only a few minutes’ drive to some of the top restaurants in the valley, the cottages have kitchens equipped with gas stoves, microwaves and refrigerators and are stocked with snacks and coffee. This pastel-hued motel is right out of the 1950s. It may not be the fanciest lodging around, but El Bonita provides casual comfort at good value and enjoys a location in the heart of the valley, a short drive from numerous St. Helena restaurants and wineries. The original motel rooms are small but tastefully appointed, while a new wing offers more space and some suites with efficiency kitchens. The garden and lawn span more than 2 acres, and the motel has a pool and whirlpool out front that are shaded by tall trees. Continental breakfast is included and can be enjoyed on the patio when weather permits.

Harvest Inn has the serene charm of a Tudor country house leavened with a dash of whimsy. The property borders the highway, but the lovely 8-acre grounds, covered with old pines, redwood trees and flowers, foster privacy. The accommodations, many with vaulted 18-foot ceilings, are lord of the manor, nearly 500 square feet with cool, masculine oak tones throughout. Brick paths wind through the property, and sturdy wood-burning brick fireplaces add weight and warmth to nearly all the rooms. Almost half the rooms have views of the neighboring Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard. There are two pools, and massages are available outdoors, under the redwoods, or in the Garden Sanctuary. Several wineries are within a 10-minute drive.

This hotel is the newest addition to Yountville’s thriving downtown. Originally called the Yountville Inn, it has undergone a multimillion-dollar renovation over the past couple of years. A stone facade and timber beams convey Old World elegance, and oak and olive trees pepper the grounds. The interiors, completely redone, feature new furniture and decor. Guest rooms are comfortable, with gas fireplaces, four-poster beds and reclaimed wood floors. Second-story rooms have vaulted ceilings, while ground-level accommodations offer semi-private patios. Bathrooms include Jacuzzi tubs, and some rooms have separate showers. For more privacy, choose one of the spacious suites with its own private garden. Guests can relax at the cypress-framed pool or spend a day at the spa. The Hopper Creek restaurant is for guests only and features an upscale take on the farmstead breakfast, such as eggs Benedict with crisp Kurobuta pork belly. Yountville’s downtown restaurants and tasting rooms are nearby.

Four (capped) geysers on the grounds gush boiling mineral water used to fill the Olympic-size pool, a plus for serious swimmers, and the spa. Mud baths, a Calistoga staple, are 100 percent volcanic ash dug and hand-sifted on the property, and numerous wineries such as Clos Pegase, Cuvaison and Sterling are a short drive away. The bungalow interiors evoke a clean, simple beach-house feel, while the lodge is modern, with special touches such as stone floors, ceiling fans and Frette linens. Children are welcome at this family-oriented locale, where hammocks and barbecue areas dot the grounds. Telephone addicts should bring their own cell phones, though. Rooms are phone-free.

Views aren’t the only appeal to the Inn at Southbridge; it’s close to a variety of restaurants and wineries in St. Helena.

Located at the entrance to downtown St. Helena, this inn projects a rustic elegance with a touch of Italian country style. The inn’s main asset is its central location, within walking distance of many fine restaurants, including Go Fish and Cindy’s Backstreet Kitchen, and as well as nearby wineries, including Merryvale. Rooms are 350 square feet with working fireplaces. Some offer tranquil views of the mountains to the east, but others face a busy courtyard or a busier Route 29, something even double-thick windowpanes can’t remedy. If you’re a light sleeper, be sure to request a room facing east. Guests enjoy free access to the neighboring day spa’s heated lap pool, fitness center and eucalyptus steam rooms.
